Benjamin ABBOTT

202180, Lance Corporal. b. 1897, Clayton d. 14th September 1916 (aged 19).

Benjamin grew up in Pudsey. The 1911 census shows that aged 15 he was a servant farm labourer at the Manor House, Whiston in Rotherham, employed by John Bagshaw.

He enlisted at Attercliffe, Sheffield into the 1st/4th (Hallamshire) battn York & Lancaster Regiment.

Benjamin was killed on 14 Sept 1916 aged 20 at the battle of Flers – Courcelette in the Somme offensive.

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
