BERRY, Thomas

Thomas BERRY

51056, Private. b. 1898, Bradford d. Mon. 4th November 1918 (aged 20).

Thomas spent his entire adult years as a soldier; he was one of the young men conscripted as soon as he was old enough on 4th October 1916. Like so many of the other Clayton casualties he went to the town centre to join, only to find that no sooner had he finished training then he was whisked off to join the 8th North Staffordshire’s in France.

After arriving at the Western Front he lived through all the major campaigns of 1918 unharmed, only to die of wounds one week before the armistice was declared. This must have come as a crushing blow to his parents Thomas and Jane at their home of 26, Hanover Square in Queensbury.

Thomas is buried at the village churchyard of Wargniers-le-Grande, Nord, France.
