Alexander PEART

41548, Private. b. 1896, Winterburn, Yorks d. Sun. 2nd December 1917 (aged 19).

Alec was the younger brother of John. Alec had followed in his elder brothers footsteps by joining up as soon as he could and had gone into the forces in March 1917. He had originally enlisted in Yorkshire but was placed in the Leicestershire Regiment. Unfortunately, like so many other men he was moved again and seconded to the 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment on his arrival in France in the middle of July 1917.

This was to be the regiment with which he spent six months at the front, as within this space of time he was killed in action by a shell.

The remainder of his family, which by this time was their father William, who lived on Oxford Street, Clayton would have been deeply saddened at the loss of a second son, and for the rest of his life collected the 14 shillings a week allowance (7 shillings for each lost relative) he was entitled to having lost both his sons.

Some of the more mature Claytonians can still remember his weekly trip down to the village post office for many years right up until after the Second World War. Alec had worked at the Great Horton Co-operative Society before enlisting.

Alexander is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
