Frank William VARLEY

30479, Private. b. 1899, Hipperholme d. 25th October 1918 (aged 19).

Frank is the only casualty who was definitely living in the village at the time of his death, but not commemorated anywhere in the village.

He had been born in Hipperholme but had grown up with his mother in Thornton and had recently moved to 9, Yews Green in the village itself.

He died of pneumonia after only six months at the front whilst he was in the 11th East Yorkshire’s (2nd Hull Pals), and was buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Belgium.
